Be Part of a Team

Why did I run 8 miles with 8 power strides at 2 in the afternoon today, in the ridiculous heat? The obvious answer is for the joy of it! But if the truth be told, it’s because I’m on a competitive Hood to Coast all-women’s team with some crazy fast women. I think deep in our hearts all of us are hoping that we win our division this year! We have been so close in years past but 1st place has alluded us.I’m not even close to being one of the fastest women on the team. So you might be thinking that fear and self-destructive comparison motivated me to train in the heat of the day…fear of letting my team down, fear of being the slowest person on the team, or fear of not being fast enough. I’ll admit, these statements raced through my mind BUT I’ve come to a place where I realize fear is a great short-term motivator but it is extremely destructive over the long-haul. I’ve found that comparing myself to others makes me want to quit. Comparison sucks the life out of me instead of fueling me to reach my potential. So, “NO, I did not run out of fear or because I was caught up in self-destructive comparison.” I’m so happy to say that because I’ve gotten stuck in that place before BUT not today!

I love being on a team! I’m part of something that is bigger than just me. I’m inspired by the gorgeous, hardworking, self-disciplined, give 110%, tough as nails, positive, supportive, and encouraging women who happen to be crazy fast. All of these women are out training in the heat so they can bring their personal best to the team on August 22nd. It’s a privilege to be in this race with them!

So why did I run today? I ran because I’m part of something bigger than myself. I’m part of a team. I can. I get too. God has placed me on a team, given me legs and heart that can tolerate and persevere under high temperatures.

So, if you are runner, get out and run today because you can! If you are not on a team, find a running group (Portland Running has running and training groups as do other running stores). Don’t get caught up in comparison. Be inspired. The way you are today does define your fitness if you are in the process of training!

If you are not a runner…Physical fitness has so many parallels with being spiritually fit. Life is a race and let’s trains for it together as we chase after the heart of God. We can be on the same team, training together and inspiring each other to be our personal best no matter what heat life throws at us! I’m preparing to teach a study on Ephesians this fall. These Scriptures are all about knowing who we are and reminds us to be united as believers because we are on the same team. The apostle Paul prays for his “team” in Ephesian 3:16-19 and this is my prayer for you today, my beautiful teammates….

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being. So that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And I pray that you being rooted and established in love may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep in the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to measure of all the fullness of God.

Join me on Tuesday September 16th from 9-11 as we “train” in the book of Ephesians together!!
